What is airbrush / spray / sunless tanning?
Tanning occurs when the skin produces pigment to protect itself from UV rays and permanent skin damage. In airbrush tanning, the tanning solution is applied by a technician using a compressor and airbrush. These tanning solutions contain the active ingredient DHA that reacts with the outer layer of skin to produce a bronzing effect, similar to what a traditional tan does. For most solutions, the color of the skin will continue to darken after the initial application, and the maximum color is reached within 12 to 24 hours. Most solutions have cosmetic bronzers that provide an immediate “tan” effect offering immediate results.
What is DHA?
DHA is the main tanning ingredient used in airbrush tanning solutions. DHA is dihydroxyacetone, a carbohydrate (monosaccharide sugar) compound approved by the FDA for use in externally applied sunless tanning solutions. DHA is usually derived from a natural source like beets or sugar cane. It was added to the FDA’s list of approved cosmetic ingredients in the 1970′s.
What is the difference between DHA and cosmetic bronzers?
DHA is an FDA approved 3 carbon sugar that is colorless when dissolved in water. But, when applied to the skin, will interact with the amino acids of the skin to produce a tanned appearance. This reaction begins upon contact with the skin, but will take a number of hours to develop. In contrast, cosmetic bronzers are coloring agents, usually FD&C dyes (approved for application to the skin). Caramel coloring or walnut stains are sometimes used as well. Most solutions have cosmetic bronzers that provide an immediate “tan” effect and help to distinguish areas of the skin that have solution already applied, but will wash-off in the first shower.
How long will an airbrush tan last?
The sunless tan develops on the outer layers of skin and lasts until these layers slough off in the natural cell renewal process. You can reasonably expect your tan to last between 5 to 10 days, depending on a variety of factors, including how well you care for your skin. Please review the complete before and aftercare instructions for more information.
How long does it take to apply?
Your airbrush session will only take 15 – 30 minutes, including a brief consultation and dry time.
What should I wear?
Please wear loose fitting, dark clothes and shoes. Please review the complete before and aftercare instructions for more information
How soon can I take a shower after an airbrush tan?
You will need to avoid any water, including sweat(!), for a minimum of 8 hours after your appointment. To make this easier, we do accept evening appointments. Please review the complete before and aftercare instructions for more information
How do I maintain my airbrush tan?
Please review the complete before and aftercare instructions for more information.
How and why should I exfoliate before a spray tan?
Since the sunless tan develops on the outer layers of skin, the natural skin renewal cycle results in shedding of skin and diminishing the faux tan. Exfoliating removes dead skin, resulting in a fresh layer of skin that will have a longer life and support a sunless tan of maximum durability. Exfoliates should be free of oils and excessive moisturizers since these may block adhesion of the sunless tanner. We offer a variety of products to help you prepare for and maintain your new tan and are happy to offer suggestions.
Why do hands and feet sometimes over-absorb sunless tanner?
Rough patches of skin can behave like “mini-sponges”, soaking up too much tanning solution and becoming overdeveloped and unsightly. A barrier cream will be applied to help avoid this problem.
Will I turn orange or off-color?
No! Any “orange” effect is usually the result of over-application for certain skin types, sunless tan build-up or using a solution that is too strong. If sprayed frequently and using a potent tan extender regularly, you may notice a sunless tan build-up that is uneven and increasingly orange tone. It is best to thoroughly exfoliate before each sunless tan application and to occasionally have some down time to allow previous tans to fade completely.
Does a sunless tan offer sun protection?
NO! Please be sure to use proper SPF to protect yourself from harmful UV Rays.
How do I handle allergy concerns and DHA?
In general, very few people are allergic to DHA. If you have any allergy concerns, we recommend a small patch of skin test first to see if problems arise.
Will a DHA tan make freckles or skin imperfection more noticeable?
Often, you will notice that a sunless tan imparts a more even tone to skin. It hides more than it calls attention to.
Will tanning solution stain my hair?
If sprayed into the hairline, tanning solution can build up on the hair shaft. This is usually not a problem since the amount of spray accidentally getting to the hair is quite small. For light blonde or graying hair it may be noticeable but will wash out in the first shower. If you are concerned, we have hair nets available
Is it safe to spray tan when pregnant?
No health risks from DHA have been reported, however its best to seek your physicians advice before proceeding with any beauty treatment, including spray tanning, while pregnant.
What if I am unhappy after my service?
We pride ourselves on quality customer service and complete satisfaction is always guaranteed with ANY of our services. If you accidentally expose your new tan to water and end up with faded/ spotty areas, come back within 48 hours and we will happily touch up any areas needed. We also carry products to neutralize DHA reaction (color development) and greatly reduce, if not remove, the new color.
To get the very best results from your tanning experience, follow these simple steps:
24-48 hours before your tan:
When possible shave or wax at least 24-48 hours before your session rather than the day of your session. Shaving/Waxing opens up the pores and they need to be closed for the tanning application. Shaving or waxing too close to your session can result in a “spotty” large pore look.
4-24 hours before your tan:
Shower and exfoliate your entire body. Use a nylon exfoliating glove, body polish or washcloth. AVOID shower products that are “moisturizing”, “creamy”, oil based or have a high pH (especially “Dove” products). Please be sure to do one final wash after rinsing conditioner out of your hair to remove any residue that could be left behind.
Day of Tan:
Avoid deodorants, moisturizers, perfume and make-up, which may act as a barrier to prevent even application of your tan. You may apply a powder to your face 2-4 hours after your session but must avoid all liquids/lotions until after you shower.
You are welcome to B.Y.O.B (bring your own bathing suit) or purchase one of our disposables. Tan lines are optional, and no bathing suit is required. Our staff is professional and discreet and tans are performed in a private room. We always respect our clients and strive to make you as comfortable as possible.
Wear or bring dark, loose fitting clothes & shoes (flip flops) to put on after your session. Minor rub off washes out of most fabrics, however, some lighter colored materials, including leather, may stain. IF you have leather interior in your car, you may want to bring a towel to sit on.
What to expect:
Your spray tan will be professionally applied in a private room by a certified technician. We start with an exfoliating pH balancing spray to ensure optimal results. Enriched with natural fruit extracts it opens pores to allow the spray tan solution to penetrate to its maximum level by balancing the pH in your skin. After a brief consult your custom solution will be mixed. The process only takes minutes after which your skin will feel touch dry.*
*For a small charge we can include a post moisture seal applied immediately after tanning, which is designed to add moisture to your skin while locking in color. It can help prevent fading when swimming in water such as chlorine pools/hot tubs, rivers, lakes, & ocean water. Lastly, it gets rid of the slight after tan “tacky” feeling leaving your skin completely dry so you can go about your day without sticking to your clothes.
If you feel you have highly sensitive skin, or you have any doubts, we recommend a small localized test spray to check your skin compatibility before having your spray tan applied.
(Basic) After Care:
You can reasonably expect your tan to last between 5 to 10 days depending on a variety of factors, including how well you care for your skin.
For the best possible results, you should avoid water, exercise, sweating and tight clothing within the first 8-10 hours after application. The longer you wait to shower after your session, the better. The color has the opportunity to deepen and get darker the longer you leave the solution on.
After 8-10 hours shower normally using a a mild shower gel. Some color wash off in the shower is normal; this is cosmetic bronzer / color guide tint, and part of the tanning process. Your tan will continue to “develop”for 12-24 hours following your session. When drying off, pat, don’t rub, skin dry.
We recommend not exfoliating or using any abrasive cleansers in between sessions and up to 5-6 days following the session. A light non-abrasive moisturizing cleanser is suggested for keeping your skin hydrated and moisturized.
Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize! 1-2x daily. You can also use a tan extender every few days to prolong your tan. Remember! Hydrated skin tans better and fades slower!
Instructions for Rapid Rinse TAN:
Rinse off after 2-3.5 hours for a sun kissed tan, 4-5 hours for medium tan or 5-6 hours for a dark tan. Do not exceed 6 hours! When rinsing off Rapid Rinse Solutions for the first time, do not use shampoo or soap. This could cause streaking. The purpose of the shower is to rinse the bronzer off gently. You may not immediately notice your new tan, but do not be alarmed! The color will continue to “develop” over the next 8 hours.
